Replacing old and deteriorating water pipework

Older water pipework can deteriorate over time, causing problems with water pressure, water quality and burst pipes.

If your home has old galvanised pipework, you may notice rusty or discoloured water, reduced flow from your taps or showers, or leaks that seem to keep appearing in different places.

H2PRO can inspect your existing water pipework and recommend the right option for your home - from replacing a single section through to a complete water renewal.

Local plumbers. Fixed upfront pricing. Quality workmanship.

What is a water renewal?

A water renewal involves replacing old or deteriorating water supply pipework with new pipework.

In older homes, we commonly find galvanised steel water pipes that have corroded internally over many years. Rust and mineral build-up can gradually restrict the inside of the pipe, affecting water flow and pressure.

As the pipework continues to age, it can also become more susceptible to leaks.

Depending on the condition of your existing plumbing, we may recommend replacing a problem section or renewing the cold water pipework throughout the home.

We'll inspect what's there, explain what we've found and provide a clear quote before any work begins.

Whole-house water renewals

When the existing water pipework throughout a property is showing signs of deterioration, a whole-house renewal can be a practical way to replace the ageing system rather than continuing to repair individual sections as they fail.

A whole-house renewal may involve replacing the cold water supply from the water meter and running new pipework to the fixtures throughout the property, including the kitchen, bathrooms and laundry.

This can be worth considering if your home has:

Old galvanised water pipework

Galvanised steel pipes were common in homes built before the 1980s and slowly rust from the inside out. Over time this restricts flow and makes leaks more likely.

Repeated water leaks

If one leak is quickly followed by another, it usually means the pipework itself is failing, not just one joint. Renewing the system stops the cycle of call-outs, water damage and rising water bills.

Rusty or discoloured water

Brown, orange or cloudy water, especially first thing in the morning, is often a sign your pipes are corroding from the inside. It can stain basins and laundry, and it's not something you want in your drinking water.

Reduced water pressure or flow

A weak shower or a tap that slows when another is running can be a sign that pipes are narrowing inside from corrosion or build-up. New pipework brings back strong, consistent flow throughout the house.

Visible corrosion

Rust, green staining or flaking on exposed pipes and fittings is often a sign of what's happening out of sight. Corroded pipes are weaker and more likely to burst without warning.

Pipework that has already required multiple repairs

Patch repairs fix the problem in front of you, but they don't make ageing pipes any younger. If you've had several repairs already, a whole house water renewal is often the more reliable and cost-effective long-term option.

Every property is different, so we'll assess the existing system and access before recommending the most suitable approach.

Cold water pipe renewals

A complete renewal isn't always necessary.

If the deterioration is limited to a particular section of your cold water pipework, we may be able to replace just that section.

Alternatively, if the existing pipework is old throughout the property, renewing the cold water supply can provide a more reliable long-term solution.

We'll explain the difference between the options so you can make an informed decision about your home.

Why do old galvanised pipes cause problems?

Galvanised steel pipework was commonly installed in older homes and can deteriorate internally as it ages.

The inside of the pipe can gradually build up with rust and corrosion, reducing the space available for water to flow through.

This can lead to:

  • Rusty or brown water, particularly when a tap is first turned on
  • Reduced water pressure and flow
  • Leaks as the pipework becomes thinner and more vulnerable
  • Ongoing repairs as different sections of the old system begin to fail
Sometimes the condition of the pipework is obvious from the outside. Other times, the first sign is a change in the water coming from your taps.

What happens during a water renewal?

01

We inspect the existing system

We'll assess the condition and layout of the existing water pipework, along with access and any obvious signs of deterioration.

02

We explain your options

We'll talk you through what we've found and whether a localised repair or more extensive renewal is appropriate.

03

You receive a clear quote

You'll receive a fixed upfront price for the recommended work, so you know what is involved before deciding whether to proceed.

04

We organise any required electrical work

Water pipework can have electrical earthing and bonding considerations*, particularly when older metal pipework is being replaced.

This means you don't have to coordinate different trades yourself.

05

We replace the pipework

Our plumbers remove the old sections and install the new water pipework, working carefully around your home and keeping disruption to a minimum.

06

We test the system

Once the renewal is complete, we'll test the new pipework and water supply to make sure everything is working properly.

* Where required, we can arrange for a licensed electrician to assess the property and complete any necessary electrical work. This may include installing an earth electrode (earth stake) or other required earthing or bonding connections.

Water renewals during renovations

If you're renovating an older home, it's worth considering the condition of the existing water pipework before walls, floors or cabinetry are closed up.

Renovations can provide much easier access to plumbing than you'll have once the work is finished.

If you're already renovating a kitchen, bathroom or laundry and the existing water pipework is showing its age, we can inspect it and discuss whether renewal should be carried out at the same time.

Water filtration

A water renewal and water filtration solve two different problems.

A renewal replaces ageing or deteriorated pipework, while filtration is designed to improve the quality of the water coming into your home.

If you're looking at both, we can discuss your options and help determine what is appropriate for your property.

Frequently asked questions about water renewal

How do I know if my water pipes need replacing?

Rusty or discoloured water, reduced pressure, poor flow and recurring leaks can all indicate deteriorating pipework. An inspection will help determine the condition of your existing system.

Do you have to replace all the pipes?

No. Depending on the condition of the existing pipework, we may recommend replacing a particular section or renewing the cold water supply throughout the home.

Can you replace galvanised pipes?

Yes. We regularly come across older galvanised water pipework that has deteriorated with age. We'll assess the existing system and explain the appropriate options.

Do I need an electrician as well?

Not necessarily. Water pipe renewals can have electrical earthing and bonding considerations, particularly where metal pipework is being removed or replaced. If electrical work is required, we can arrange for a licensed electrician to assess and complete it.

Can you install water filtration at the same time?

Yes. Water filtration is a separate service, and we can discuss filtration options if you're looking to improve the water quality in your home.

What our customers say

5 star reviews

Jayden and Riley originally came to sort an issue with blocked drains under my concrete driveway. They were prompt, efficient, professional in every way and always patiently explained every step. When the source of the issue was discovered they proceeded to diligently sort a solution. They worked efficiently, going above and beyond expectations, and completely cleaned up when the job was fineished. Now 12 months lager Jaydan returned to complete my annual check u, performing camera inspection of works previously done. He found grasses and roots that had to be removed. He clearly explained it all as I watched it on a screen. I have no hesitation in recommending H2pro to anyone needing a plumber in the Eltham area. Definitely five stars!!

A year later: We just had Peter out for a new problem, a blocked sewer. Once again a thoroughly professional service to diagnose and clear the immediate blockage and he is preparing a quote with options for dealing with the tree root and misalignment of pipes.
