We were called to this Doncaster home after the ensuite shower became blocked.
This property has had drainage issues before. Tree root intrusion had also been found during a previous visit. The homeowner had already been advised that the affected underground drain would eventually need to be repaired.
Finding the cause
The overflow relief gully (ORG) was visually inspected first. This is where the ensuite shower and basin discharge.
Roots could be seen in the drain. However, we wanted to see what was happening further inside the pipe.
A CCTV drain inspection was carried out to get a closer look.
The camera showed significant root growth inside the underground drain. The pipe was approximately 50% restricted by large roots. In addition, significant root growth had occurred since our previous visit.
Clearing the blockage
The roots were removed from the drain. The ensuite shower and basin were then run to check the flow.
Thankfully, the drainage had been restored and everything was flowing correctly again.
However, root growth is an ongoing issue at this property and the roots will continue to grow back causing further blockages.
The affected underground drain will eventually need to be repaired to provide a permanent solution.
The next step
For now, the homeowner has decided to replace the ORG as the first step fixing this issue.
This will give us better access to the drain and make future clearing and maintenance easier when the roots continue to cause problems.
This job is a good example of why a CCTV drain inspection can be valuable for recurring blockages. Although the roots could be seen from the surface, the camera showed us how extensive the root growth had become and how much of the pipe was being restricted.
