Ask any homebuyer what they look for in houses. We’re willing to bet that a good-looking, well-designed and fully kitted-out kitchen or bathroom are somewhere close to the top.

In fact, most of us know that the kitchen and bathroom are the two rooms that can add the most value to your home.

Frankly, we’re not surprised: they’re the rooms we spend the most time in (particularly the kitchen), so it’s a no-brainer that they are the spaces on which we spend the most money.

There is a whole “sink market” out there!

Of course, we can’t talk about our bathrooms and kitchens without discussing the humble sink. And when it comes to choosing a sink, we’re certainly spoilt for choice!

Don’t be surprised to see dozens of different types of sinks when conducting research online or visiting local stores in person.

There are a lot of considerations that goes into choosing the right sink: looks, functionality, and fit, just to name a few.

If you’re wondering which sink would best fit your kitchen, bathroom or your utility room, H2-Pro is here to give tips on choosing the right sink!

Everything but the kitchen sink: choose the right sink

Did you know that your typical Aussie spends an average of 6.1 hours per week cooking in the kitchen? And this doesn’t even account for all the social time we spend in the kitchen.

Further, as open-plan living has grown in popularity, we have seen how the kitchen naturally flows into living space, making the kitchen bench as much a part of your living room as your couches.

It should come as no surprise that the kitchen sink is probably one of the busiest areas in your kitchen. With that in mind, you want to make sure you have the right one installed in this particular area of your home.

Consider the size of your kitchen

Kitchen size is perhaps one of the most important considerations you have to make when choosing a sink.

After all, you don’t want to go to all the effort of buying a sink only to find out that your kitchen bench doesn’t have enough room to install it!

You have to first figure out if you have space in your kitchen. This means more than just measuring your kitchen bench: be sure you measure the space underneath your bench too, as you’ll need to have enough room for the sink as well as all the important plumbing that comes with it.

Research various sink materials

Once you have determined the right sink size that fits your kitchen, consider the kind of material you want for your sink.

While most of us think of metal sinks when we think of kitchens, the truth is that homeowners actually have a range of options when it comes to sink materials, each with their own pros and cons.

Stainless steel

Truly the vanilla when it comes to kitchen sinks (in a good way!).

Stainless steel is without a doubt the most common type of kitchen sink… and for good reason! This type of sink is durable, affordable and looks good with nearly any type of kitchen bench.

If you choose a stainless steel sink, ensure your selection is one that will resist rust and corrosion.

Fireclay ceramic

Looking for something a bit more exotic? If so, a fireclay sink might be just the sink for you!

Made of ceramic clay, fireclay sinks are first sculpted into the shape of a sink, coated and placed in a kiln at extremely high temperatures for periods of up to 20 hours.

The result is a glossy and sleek sink that is sure to grab the attention of your guests.

Though fireclay sinks fall on the expensive side of the spectrum, they are much more heat and stain resistant than steel. Just be careful that since fireclay is essentially porcelain, it can be susceptible to chipping.

Granite composite

Made by combining natural granite or quartz with resin, this extremely durable type of sink is stain, scratch and heat resistant. The result is a sink that gives the feel and look of the real thing, but without the durability issues and weaknesses that would come from carving a sink out of those materials.

Composite granite gives your kitchen a unique, modern, and almost “sci-fi” look!
